Back at home in Prineville

After a day of performing for a Lerro Photography Charter, Mt. Emily Shay #1 sits in the yard of the City of Prineville Railway, preparing to enter the engine house. This angle provides you with a nice view of the three vertically-oriented cylinders, and the beefy drive shaft which extends the full length of this classic 3-Truck Shay. One of the nice things about an oil-burning locomotive such as this one is that there is no need to dump out the fire or clean out the ashpan. The fuel supply and atomizer are simply shut down and the locomotive is allowed to cool. You can also see that the big spark arrestor on the stack has been folded over, and there is a handy support frame welded on top of the smokebox to hold it in that position. After shutting down the dynamo and other appliances, the locomotive will be run into the engine house, where she wills stay until next use. One of the reasons why this locomotive is so pretty is that she's always stored indoors.
