The central idea of my concentration is translating Beatles songs into imagery.
I started off with literal translations of Beatles lyrics. For example in picture #1, I illustrate the song “In My Life.” The lyrics talk about memories that are cherished, so I thought about my own life and reliving cherished memories through snapshots from my childhood. I continued with literal translations in picture # 6.using the lyrics “With tangerine trees and marmalade skies,” to create my imagery. In the next group of images, I switched from illustrating lyrics to creating the characters described in the songs. For example, on picture #2 I created the character “Polythene Pam” I used the lyrics to guide me in creating the character. In picture #11,I illustrated “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” I used a more figurative translation, going more in-depth with the meaning. I researched the song and found that it was inspired by a woman who gets revenge on her husband. I depicted her imagining her own hand transforming into a gun to kill her husband. In picture #12, I was inspired by many elements in the song--the soothing tone, the lyrics describing an “ocean child” and how the repetitive words sound like the soft whispers that slowly fade away. All of these elements guided me to create an image that goes beyond a literal translation and captures the essence of the song. In the end, I learned that in each song is like a poem, using a diversity of elements to create an artistic impression.
