Protest vs Developers: No Arena in Chinatown!

A few dozen people, the majority Jews, turned out at the JFRE (Jewish Federation Real Estate) “Legends and Leaders” breakfast on October 21, 2022. to protest the planned 76ers Arena in Chinatown.
With signs, banners, songs and chants, the participants challenged the predatory development schemes being peddled by David Adelman and Josh Harris, 76ers Arena proponents and billionaire developers.
The event is billed as a chance to “network and shmooze with Philadelphia’s top real estate developers and professionals,” but it is a shameless attempt to sell an Arena to other Jewish developers and investors with apparently no recognition that Chinatown, the last remaining community of color in Center City Philadelphia and one of the last few vital and thriving Chinatowns on the East Coast is an asset and a treasure.
We say: shame! A shonde!
• As Jews, we oppose a 76ers Arena being built in Chinatown without regard to community needs or desires.
• We support community demands for a fair process and proof that there is long-term community benefit involved: both for Chinatown and Philadelphia.
We say to JFRE: Do The Right Thing. People Over Profit. No More Sacrifice Zones. No short-term bonanzas for investors with long-term costs shouldered by communities of color. No theft of beloved community. #No Arena in Chinatown!
Legitimate community Jewish Legends and Leaders spoke—people who truly represent ethical and principled investment in long-term community well-being.
