My Puppets

by furtech

I've just started working on puppets. They're much easier to build (you can carry bits around when you're hand-sewing). They are easier to transport (fits on a carry-on bag). Most importantly, you can actually -see- the reaction of people to their performance (as opposed to a full-body puppet, which you have to take on faith that people around you are enjoying the performace and not being creeped out or terrified).

Thanks to Google and a lot of YouTube videos I got a pretty good idea of basic design. My mentors, Lynette and Terrie, also had a lot of experience working with (and building) puppets professionally, so they were invaluable for filling in the gaps like using leather for palettes and keeping the weight of the puppets as light as possible.

In addition to the hand puppets, I'm going to include some of the full-body puppets I've made. What's the difference between a full-body puppet and a creature costume? Not at all sure. But some people get touchy about it.

I've tried a range of puppet-making styles-- from Bunraku-styles manipulated (ghost horse) to full body muppetry (Blue Meanie, Warg) to basic Muppetry.
