Bonsai Class

by furtech

Once a month I try to get to my bonsai class. There is a veritable miniature forest of oak seedlings in the yard now and I would like to get them re-potted and start to shape them. Time, as always, is the rub: I don't even have time to weed my plants. How sad is that?? No time to weed a miniature garden...sigh.

I had brought a few plants to class to trim and repot...and ended up getting a lesson from the Sensei and the other master: they suggested that one of my pot-bound oaks be trained as a root-cascade design. This is where-- with a long-rooted plant-- the roots cascade down over rocks (with no soil) and take root in the soil below. This is a very advanced technique and one that I had hoped to learn one day.

Well, today was the day! Akira and Walter did all of the work while I held things and watched. Feather rock was carved, the tree positioned and then packed with moss and soil.

I have to keep it steadily moist for the next several months until the roots at the base have a chance to grow into the soil in the pot-proper. I'm very excited!
