Nepal & Tibet
by elr1983
Nepal is one of the major gateways to Tibet. It is also an attractive tourist destination in its own right. The capital of Nepal for hundreds of years, Kathmandu and its surrounding area has several important world heritage sites. The road from Kathmandu to the Tibet border is very scenic, passing in a green river valley with the snowy Himalaya peaks in the background.
Western Tibet borders the Himalaya range and consists of a high desolate plateau with very little human presence. The road from the Nepalese border is unpaved, and crosses two high moutain passes over 16,000 feet above sea level, before emerging into central Tibet near the village of Tingri. The road from Tingri to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, is paved.
