Like Vincent Versace, I view photography as a way "to slow down to the speed of life, make visual poems that take the viewer the way you were taken. To visually speak poetically and to write with light using the language of heightened emotion."
I have always loved photography, both looking at it, and creating it, starting with my first Brownie camera. Photography has helped me to see the world more deeply and clearly and has expanded my view of things. I hope that my creations share some of this experience with my audience.
I practice mindful photography. I focus on being as fully present and aware as possible in each moment. Then I let the images "pull me through the lens". Living in Key Largo, FL and the mountains of North Carolina, as well as some traveling, all provide me with a wealth of experience that becomes the foundation of my photography practice. I set out to create images that capture not only what I see, but also the variety of emotions evoked by experiential moments which speak to me. Hopefully, the viewer can explore the emotional resonances that may arise during the encounter with one of my images. My work is more about the process of creating images, than the subject matter. The subjects range from landscapes and seascapes, to macro images, from images of nature, to abstract and impressionistic images, from portraits of my dogs to portraits of strangers and street photography. Sometimes the images stand alone. Sometimes I combine a group of images together to form a visual poem, without words.
I have practiced photography for years, learning through independent study. Many mentors, colleagues, books, and workshop experiences have contributed to my education. I also have a Ph.D. and M.A. in clinical psychology, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, and a background in neuroscience. I recently retired after over 40 years of practicing clinical psychology. I had a private practice, working with adults and children, as well as teaching clinical skills. Years of paying attention to the natural and human environment, as well as honing my own psychological insights about and awareness of emotions and motivations, inform my photography practice, coloring it with a unique perspective. I trained to become a mindfulness meditation teacher with Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli, from the Center for Mindfulness, U. Mass Medical School. My background in mindfulness meditation also informs my photography practice.
My images have been purchased privately, shown (and awarded) in juried gallery exhibits, used on websites, displayed at the public aquarium in Lyons, France, used on the Environmental Defense Fund website, published in a Florida Audubon calendar, published in Schmap for Fairchild Tropical Gardens, Miami, and have won an award in the "Birds in Nature Art Show", Key Largo, FL (2017), as well as taken first place in digital art in the 2017 annual art show of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles, Islamorada, FL. One of my visual poem projects, ”Journey of the Heart”, was published in HealthEssentials, an online publication of the Cleveland Clinic. health.clevelandclinic.org/2012/09/images-of-healing/.
Mostly I photograph what I love, or what moves me. I take my camera with me most places, and take photographs almost every day. I take photographs of nature, from landscapes to macros. My dogs have taught me much about portraiture. I'm more passionate about composition than the technical aspects, although I try to master the technicalities in order to create better art. My Flickr account includes all of my old work, uncurated, including the mistakes, as well as my recent work. A curated collection of my artwork can be found on my website, www.louiselindsay.com, where images are for sale, printed on paper, metal, canvas, framed, etc. I also am on Instagram, www.instagram.com/louiselindsayphotography/
I practice and teach mindfulness meditation. Mindful or contemplative photography is part of my practice. Creating art is a way for me to be more present and awake in the world, and to invite others to awaken to this dimension.
