My Take on 25 Lessons I've Learned about (Photography) Life
This book did an amazing job at taking the photography experiences of one man and translating these experiences and making the tangible for photographers and non-photographers alike. I loved the 25 lessons that the author presents and how practical they were. The author did a great job at incorporating down-to-earth examples of real people and real situations which make the book a fun and engaging read that will draw you in from the beginning (at least it did for me). Outside of this, the book shares some very valuable things with people who are looking for the self-help advice that this book provides. Not being a person that seems to need this, never-the-less it is important that this book has pearls of wisdom for all who read this book!

The Unmotivated Motivational Speaker Reviews 25 Lessons
A special thanks to David Stoddard for posting a tongue-in-cheek review of my book, 25 Lessons I've Learned about Photography...Life.
David writes:
"I am on lesson 7 of the 25.
The one which has stuck with me the most to this point is “Use Your Imagination”. I won't go into the details (mainly because I don't necessarily remember them as much as how they affected me). This was the first chapter to make me want to print small posters of quotes and paste them around the office.
Use your imagination is a reminder to use the creativity each of us has (and yes, believe it or not, we all have our own imagination. It helps make possible what we and others feel might not be possible. And it makes living just a bit more fun. Read the book. You'll see what I am saying."

Phillip Kay, author of "The Far-Famed Blue Mountains of Harry Phillips" (Second Back Row Press, Leura 1985), which revived the reputation of a famous but forgotten photographer, recently gave a favorable review of my book, 25 Lessons I’ve Learned about Photography Life! on BestQuest. An excerpt follows.
“Because his photography was part of his healing process, Lorenzo learnt to see photography as a metaphor. If what you see causes you pain, you can move, adopt another viewpoint, another perspective. Happiness is mobility, flexibility. There is a perspective for everyone where what they see brings contentment and fulfillment. They just have to keep moving until they find it. There is a point of view we can all seek out. From it we can view the beauty inherent in all things.”

25 LESSONS I'VE LEARNED (about photography) JUST RELEASED! October 24, 2008, New York City: Husband, father, and corporate employee— Lorenzo's life revolved around home, work, and his daily commute from the suburbs to the city.
Then, one day in the Spring of 2005, he found himself staying at The Little Church in midtown Manhattan in the wake of a marital separation. Living in virtual isolation for three months, he had a rare chance to re-examine his life.
Quite unexpectedly, he found himself wandering around the city to take photographs, a passion he had let slide in the years of pursuing a career and starting a family. During his nightly sojourns through the streets of New York City, he was reminded of some important life lessons—lessons too easily forgotten in the blur of everyday existence.
Now one of the premier up-and-coming photographers on the streets of New York City, 25 Lessons I've Learned (about photography) chronicles Lorenzo’s journey into the amazing world of digital photography and how it helped him to reconnect with the world around him, and to live a life that is truer to one’s self.
Considered an "Internet photography sensation" by Time Out New York and a "Flickr star" by Rob Walker, Consumed columnist, for New York Times Magazine, in 2008, Lorenzo was also chosen to be the HP Be Brilliant Featured Artist
A Few Pleasant Surprises
September 10, 2008, New York City:
These last couple of days have been rife with pleasant surprises.
First, I learned that Hispanic MPR.com recently published a review of my book 25 Lessons. Editor Elena del Valle writes, “In the book, Lorenzo shares his secret to the art of living and the simple rules of photography. He meant for the book to be inspirational and poetic; and to spark readers’ creativity, and reawaken their passion for life.”
Click here to read the complete article:
New Yorker Illustrates Life Learning in Photography Book.
A special thanks to Elena for your kind words.
Secondly, I woke up the other morning to find a pleasant and big surprise, for upon checking the flickr stats I found that viewership had reached a new height with 9,879 views overnight, more than doubling the daily average of the last couple of months.
Thank you to everyone that made that possible.
Finally, Paul Giguere informed me today that he posted a discussion we had a few weeks ago on his site, thoughtsonphotography.com. You can hear that podcast interview HERE.
Paul introduces our talk by saying, “One of the reasons I so enjoyed interviewing Lorenzo is that he has managed to make photography such an integral part of his life in such a way that I think his personal life and his photography are inseparable at this point. He has truly managed to integrate it into a higher order of thinking and living, and I think he personifies the photographic life…”
Thank you Paul.
25! A Celebration: October 25, 2008, New York City:

May 27, 2008, New York City, 9:55 PM, EST:
We reached another milestone tonight when the flickr-meter posted new stats and the view count on my photos fell into 4 million.
Hence, I am feeling an overwhelming sentiment of gratitude to everyone who has ever taken the time to view my work and would like to say thank you at least four million times for all the positive feedback, encouragement and inspiration. With utter and great sincerity, thank you.
To celebrate, I’ve published two new books.
How to be a Great Photographer, Lessons Learned on the Streets of New York City.
Streetwise is a compendium of the original 25 Lessons I've Learned (about Photography) that served as the inspiration for the bestseller 25 Lessons: The Art of Living, as well as 25 More Lessons (I've Learned) and 25 Points of Creativity, to complete the 25 Lessons Trilogy.
And Sentimintos, a short collection of 40 photographs, 6 of them taken at a black-tie affair at the Waldorf~Astoria in New York City on February 6, 2006, and 34 more intoxicated introspective self portraits.
April 2, 2008, New York City:
25 Lessons: The Art of Living was just released today and it is already an Instant International Best Seller.
Last year, Blurb printed close to 90,000 unique titles and hundreds of thousands of people from around the world have downloaded Blurb Booksmart in order to enable bookmaking. In addition, blurb currently prints and delivers thousands of books a week.
25 Lessons: The Art of Living has been a monumental journey, a labor of love and nothing less than an extraordinary experience for me. I spent the last three years creating the book: taking all the 500+ photos that are in the book, writing the story and the incredible lessons I've learned from the experience of becoming a New York City street photographer, creating the layout and design for the book, and even writing the code for the website, www.25Lessons.com, which I also translated into 10 different languages.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! to all my friends on flickr that have supported me on this project.

A Little History of How I Got Started
People inspire me! Life inspires me! NYC inspires me! The night and the streets and love and my family and friends all inspire me! And maybe most importantly, I inspire me, for I am an ardent believer in self-determination.
In March 2005 I began to take photos more seriously and now I have 12,000+ fotos on flickr. I won the Excellence in Urban Photography, have been cited by over 100 blogs and sites, 2,222 have been "favorited" (a sample of 50 of those alone have been viewed 14,853 and marked as favorites 882 times, as of October 3, 2005), I've written extensively on my experience (25 Lessons I've Learned, More Lessons, and Creativity) and those sites have been visited by more than 15,000 people over the last couple of months. Albeit I have no formal training, I shoot everyday and feel the years of being a creative writer have enabled me to be open to the entire sensory experience requisite of being able to take great pictures.
Otherwise...in a glorious 37 or 38 years (i forget) of living I have pitched to and fro, undulated slow, tossed and turned restlessly, tirelessly and blissfully, and made utterly sane and madly vane love with life. this is what i love about the digital photography revolution - that we all now are able to capture those exquisite moments and curves and shadows and lines and illusions that make life so incredibly amazing.
Currently, I live in NYC. I have two boys, Enzo (10) and Nicky (7) whom i love and cherish, and who graciously tolerate my incessant documentation of their ever-evolving childhood.
In the Spring of 2005 I completed a project in which dozens of fellow photographers from all over the world helped me cull through the collection of 11,000 photos I have taken since March of this year to determine what are my “100 Best.” Ultimately, we decided on five different books. Take a look:
I was born and raised in sunny Northern California (San Jose, Silicon Valley), this explains a lot of things...I also lived in LA (UCLA '89, BA in international cultural studies) and moved to NYC for good in 1992 to matriculate in the graduate School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University ('94). I also completed graduate studies for the Masters in Political Scie

Technically and artistically flawless and at the same time experimental photography. Lorenzodom's work keeps on breaking new ground!!!
As a person who photographs NYC and it's inhabitants on my own, I must admit that Lorenzo's travels through the city is quite impressive. Day or night, he gets great captures. A talent on the precipice of greatness, it is always a treat to see what is next from this prolific artist.
Mr Lorenzodom brings creativity to new heights. I am grateful to him because he inspires me to be better. In as much as great photographers tell stories with there images Lorenzodom also tells great stories with his words. I have taken the time to read them and found my self enthralled and inspired
I think I'm one of 60000 people who have written Lorenzo a testimonial and I am glad to. He's an amazing photographer who is worthy of every bit of fame and popularity he has. His story is inspiring as well as his photos and there is not a better success story on flickr than his.
prolific, profound, productive, persuasive, out of this world photog. keep it up. . .

Lorenzo is a photographer of flair, dynamism and style; and through his photostream, a vivid sense of life in the city - specifically New York- is displayed, through his dazzling pictures that capture real movement: a neon-lit buzz. It is obvious that he is a professional and is already making his mark with his work so suited to advertising. Alongside all the sophisitication of his captures is the warmth of humanity - through his shots of people partying, the charm of his clever rendering of early childhood photographs; but no more so than through the vibrant smile of the man behind the camera : Lorenzo! - Sincerely, Stephen B Whatley, Artist , London, UK.

It didn't surprise me when I first met Lorenzo that he was the father of two beautiful boys. The second glimpse into the innocent, spontaneous world given to a person when they become a parent is etched within each frame he snaps. The curiosity of Lorenzo, his unashamed lust for life and care not attitude of his work reminds me of looking at something for the first time. His audience becomes the child, unable to safely reference images yet comforted by the heart that resonates through each frame.

Do you know when we become sensitive to what is happening to us? As soon as we begin to be aware of our thoughts, of our feelings, of our body, our sensations – this energy is beginning to work in us. Without this... "sensitive energy" we are nothing but machines. Up to that point there is nothing but mechanicalness, but as soon as sensitive energy enters, the possibility of separating from our own automatism begins. Pain and pleasure come from sensitivity. Without this sensitivity a photographer will not be able to recognise let alone to photograph the instance that he wish to capature, the moments in time that is capable to give the desired impact. I'm glad to say that this so called SENSITIVITY is clearly apparent in Lorenzo's works and it has been a pleasing experience just to describe it in this modest testimonial from me. Thank you.

When I first saw Lorenzo’s on Flickr I was immediately struck with his New York City street photographs, I had never seen any other photographer who was able to capture the essence of NYC street life in such a unique and distinctive style. At that time, I had several questions about his work which he gratefully answered along with an invitation to meet with him in New York. Unfortunately this never came to fruition and I have always regretted not taking the opportunity to meet with him in person, perhaps to learn a little of his camera magic. However in many of my conversations on great photographers, I frequently mention Lorenzo’s work and prided myself for my early stage recognition of his talent. Lorenzo has been able to capture moments in time which allow the viewer to study relationships which can not be observed in the real-time dynamics of life. Even more intriguing are Lorenzo’s sequential photographs, each one remarkable in itself, but viewed together are nothing less that a visual urban poem. It has been my pleasure to watch Lorenzo’s rapid growth as a leading photographer of our time.

God Save Lorenzo!

The first word for Lorenzo’s work is PASSION another is EFFORT and the last is VISION. These three signposts to communicating with images are reflected everywhere in his images and his words. For Lorenzo there is meaning and the revelation of myth in the smallest vignette. Each image or series of images are a revelatory story. But more than that, Lorenzo wants to give…give from the life he reveals from the center of his passion, the fruit of his effort, the broadness of his vision. His intent, as with all real artists, is to share the life that it is his pleasure to experience - for truly, the creation of art is a rare pleasure as is this lovely book of life lessons for the artist or for any wanderer on this planet to enjoy.

Let's cut to the chase: Lorenzo is a master. His body of work is some of the very best on Flickr and may very well be some of the best being done in the medium today. His street/city work follows in the tradition of Paul Strand, Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand and Larry Friedlander. But he doesn't simply imitate nor work within previously defined boundaries. Lorenzo's "street" approach goes beyond studied and safe, offering new vision, compelling the viewer to see what they have seen before differently... freshly. Lorenzo's work is not limited to a single genre. He transcends categorization. Take two of his recent images, for example: "Risk" and "Looking at the GW." Very different subjects-- one almost claustraphobic, the other limitless... one gritty and gray, the other rich in color and tone... one a social commentary, the other pure poetry. Great, great stuff. Inspired and inspiring. ... and educational: Lorenzo's "25 Lessons" should be a must for anyone who raises a camera to their eye. They are well thought out, deceptively simple--easy to grasp--and applicable to all phases of the photographic art, as seminal a piece of writing on the how of photography as Ansel's dissertation on the zone system. And make no mistake, they are not a basic primer for beginners. I found them to be reenergizing, perceptive and extremely useful. No one can create images as Lorenzo has without integrating the tenets of discerning vision and the richness of details of life without having an extraordinary level of passion. It is clear Lorenzo is passionate-- about his work... and about life. I have been touched by his story, his writings and by his work. I can't imagine anyone not being so.
