NOTE: The following is not about a dispute. I just realized that I'd like to appeal to nature photographers to add, somewhere, information of the general area that a photo is taken. Half the fun of seeing something new is to find out where it was seen. It is like virtual exploration. So, please consider including what information you can. And since I was addressing the issue anyway I thought I could use it here too.
MY REPLY TO BIRD IDENTIFICATION HELP GROUP!
Re: Location of Birds. I am of the opinion that ALL photos of birds should include location information, and always intend to have that information in all of my bird photos no matter which group it is in. Because I normally add a lot of information, i.e., name of beach, city, county, state, and country I put the bulk of the information in the tags.
"The Title of the picture seems like a good place to put some location information (which I did not, sorry!) But my reasoning is that when I look at a photo in a group, or photo stream when hovering with the mouse, only so many words are visible. So, I believe city and state will be enough for someone to see if they are interested, and more will be truncated (not visible while mouse hovering) anyway.
If a person in only interested in a particular region my thought is they will have enough information to click on the photo and find the rest of the info.
After I get an ID that I am satisfied with I INTEND to update the tags and the title. I do forget sometimes, and that is not intentional.
I also intend to make it clear I am asking for ID or ID conformation, in the title. Sometimes I don't think I am going to add it to the ID Help group, then change my mind at the last minute. But detailed location, and bird species data should always be in my tags. It is part of my personal mission to make available photos of specific species and locations available for people doing searches.
So just know that I am trying to comply in a way that will be must usable for people browsing the group, or searching Flickr or the internet. Your guidelines for the group are greatly appreciated, as they serve everyone in the group, and in the community in general. I hope my way of meeting the criteria is acceptable!
Oh, the date is pretty much always included because I NEVER delete my EXIF data and Flickr always supplies it off to the right. Even though my knowledge and contributions to birders, and photographers is small, it is meant to be available. People, in general, will be granted permission to use my photos, and know my basic settings and equipment used. Since everyone seems to be a critic, and an expert, so I don't usually have much to say about how I process my photos, other than I trying to reproduce something that takes into account what the camera saw, and fixing any major flaws in exposure, and contrast, and such. I virtually never change color tints in any way. I do change saturation and brightness. Occasionally I have to deal with color fringing, or chromatic aberrations, but mostly they don't bother me that much.
So that is the information I provide. I would provide even more, but I am not good at it!"

Additional information: When I edit a photo, especially a nature photo, I am not trying to change it, I am trying to make it easier to see the details. People that say they never edit their photos, or that it is wrong to do so simply do not understand digital cameras, and what they can and cannot do without your help. It is amazing they do as good a job as they do, but the camera does not know exactly what your trying to do. If it makes mistakes in exposure, saturation, contrast, brightness, and so on then you can usually get it closer to what you wanted to get in the first place.
What the eye sees and what the camera sees are fundamentally very different. No camera can respond to changes in brightness and contrast and dynamic range as well as the human eye can. No camera can even see all of the colors that they human eye can see. By the same token they say that the amount of light can change by a factor of 100x before the eye even notices. Very often it is low light for the camera when it is still perfectly fine for us. A subject that is backlit is still visible to us when the camera only sees a dark silhouette. So when you take a photo and lose details in the shadows, you can process it a little differently. That is not changing nature. That is recovering what you took the picture of, that the camera missed. Anyway, for me editing is usually to restore what I saw. I don't really do very much, very often, because I'm not that good at it. While we are at it many, if not most subjects are better taken with a flash. Not really true for birds, but certainly true for most things. I'm also not very good at using flashes, so I use them mostly in macros. But you can't really criticize using light, of a known color temperature in order reproduce truer colors...can you? Everyone figures out what works for them. I try to do things the simplest, quickest way possible. The better equipment gets, probably the less image post processing will be needed. That's fine with me!

My so called philosophy of life:
Their are a lot more sociopaths out there than we would like to think. Almost everyone I have ever asked who their hero or role model was said their mom or dad or other close relative. Occasionally it will be a really good teacher who was an inspiration. So really, people with flawed parents and bad schools don't get much guidance. For those who manage to still feel empathy and want be liked and fit in there all kinds of pressures to think what we are told think, and do what we are supposed to do, even if it kills us. I can't be what people want me to be, and that exacts a toll. It also compels me to try to accept who you are. As the saying goes, can you work with that?
If you can find a reason to like me, I can find a reason to like you. If I see something I like, I'm going to encourage it. In the news it seems like we are supposed to blame each other because the people in power know we rise to the bait every time. Political satire used to be funny because the satirist had to be witty. Now you see politicians simply being delusional and completely idiotic. What can you do? The satire is now actually a step up from the reality. Lily Tomlin noticed it when she said:
"No matter how cynical I become, I just can't keep up."
What really gets me is constantly being told who to hate. It's the illegal aliens stealing our jobs, it's the people overseas who compete unfairly, the athlete's all on steroids especially Lance Armstrong and Barry Bonds, the crazy people on drugs, people who don't recycle, people who never graduated high school or college, lawyers, unions, liberal press, politicians, people on welfare, panhandlers, moral majority, people who don't speak english fluently, the police, gangs, people who ride bikes and get in the way of cars, people who break the speed limit, people who obey the speed limit, and on and on. It isn't that I don't have an axe to grind, or anything approaching that!
It just seems more logical to blame the people in charge if you don't like the way things are run. Even better, doesn't it make sense to question was kind of society expects bad leaders make things better. Who would think fining someone millions for stealing billions is going to stop corruption? Who would believe someone is against drugs who trades weapons for drugs to finance killing? Who would say we need to torture people to preserve human rights? In practice, the American dream is to have enough money to keep yourself above everyone else. The dream is not for a better society. It is to escape. Much like the original Star Trek series episode where the privileged class lived in the clouds, completely isolated from the downtrodden masses who made their beautiful lives possible. Under the circumstances it does seem like a good plan. Only - Might the day come when people decide to "Tear down the mission walls"?
I also tend to think that we believe we believe things, when we really don't. An example is when someone does something we don't like and we think that we hate them. We hate what they did, but I don't think down inside that we hate the person. It is our nature to try to get along with each other. But there are policies of hatred and economies of hatred.
That and I have hazel eyes.

I add every new contact as friend. I understand that there are reasons other people have to use the different "ranks" for contacts but I have no use for them, so do not use them. I've included this note in case the question ever arises, "Is he going to send me pictures of his manhood?" Alas, the answer is no. Secondly, I do not like ranking people, nor do I like being ranked.

About now I realize that my "profile" has become my "poor man's blog"
One Question: Why is it that no body says anything about themselves in their profiles? I'm not afraid of people will discover something about me. I'm not proud of who I am. I just like to know a little about people, so I sort of start the ball rolling by saying where I am from and some of my, especially, photography related interests! It is an offering to my kindred spirits who always look hopefully at someone's profile - To find...Nothing!
My Flickr biography:
- At first I was most interested in digital art, especially colorful, 3D, glassy, or metallic effects. I also got into geometric distortion, morphing, kaleidoscope, 3D, HDR, texture, and painting effects, fonts, calligraphy, warping, and stuff. I was a little shocked to be NIPSA'd for my efforts. I joined a political debate forum and was kicked out...for debating? No it seems like Flickr wants to discourage groups and like minded people exchanging ideas. Why can't they just except that we are trying to maintain some contacts, and let nature take it's course. Anyway just thought I'd mention that it gets annoying when it becomes harder to do what you want to do every time something gets improved. So...NIPSA sort of killed my artistic spirit. Especially since so many artists who where my inspiration left. However, I did finally get a DSLR, and got lost in seeing the world in new detail. Late entry: For many the Holy Grail of flicker is to have a photo make it to "Explore". It wasn't until years later I found out one of my first digital artworks made it into "Explore." Apparently my style of work offended someone because I was almost immediately NIPSA'd. Me being me, I didn't even notice that for years. I finally did get one regular photo in explore. It felt kind of good.
DSLR #1, Canon Rebel XTi (D400)
- I got a digital Rebel XTi DSLR. I wanted to see how a bug would look...I have been facinated with macros ever since!
- Not being able to afford a lot of genuine Canon EOS EF / EF-s lenses I instead, at first, bought a lot of manual focus, high quality old lenses. They are a viable alternatives, and I will even say that some of them would be very hard for me to do without. I do love genuine EOS lenses, but I also love some of the advantages the some manual focus lenses have. In many cases they are very compact, and much faster than the EF lenses I could afford to buy.
DSLR #2 The Rebel T1i, aka D500
- My Camera was stolen in September. I nearly died! Finally, after 5 months I am shooting again. I have a new Rebel T1i. It's very nice!
- I damaged My Rebel T1i! And it was pretty much my own ignorance. Did you know that the thin metal shutter is much more prone to be hurt by focused light than the sensor behind it? Think about it, when every your camera is pointed in the same direction as the sun for any amount of time. You can burn a hole in the shutter. Take my word for it!
Canon D70.
- I am now shooting with a Canon 70D. Functionally it is an improvement over the Rebel T1i. It's a good choice, and the kit lenses with stepping motors are way cool! If not for the problem with the T1i, I would have a full frame DSLR by now. If I can only have either an APS-c or a 35mm I have to choose APS-c, because of I like my APS-c lenses, and I like apparent magnification for telephoto. But I still want to see the wide, low-light, high resolution world of 35mm. Someday. Soon, I hope!
EOS D70 is dead (until repaired)
I'm pretty sure the spring that attaches to the mirror just popped out. I won't know until I send it in. Soon, one would hope.
Review: The camera has enough resolution the make a lot of my lenses not good enough. Before I don't think it was an issue. It has become one now. Even though it can make beautiful photos with the kit lenses, I have finally, after ten long years gotten a couple of L-lenses. They can handle the high pixel density, high resolution sensor. Is this a cop out? Have I earned the right to use L-lenses. Well you can't stop me, so I guess I have!
EOS 5D Mark II ***Full Frame Days are Here!***
It was cheaper to buy this beautiful camera than to send the D70 in for repairs! I love this camera already! But I still want my D70 back. In other words: "I want to be Pope and King."

I know that people like to receive comments, and I do leave lots of comments...Since joining in 2005 (I just checked) I have left almost exactly twice as many comments as I have received. Sometimes I don't leave as many comments for photographers that receive tons of comments already. Sometimes I just don't feel worthy to leave a comment on someones work, who is truly great, in my eyes. Hopefully, it will make you feel better knowing that at least I am out there making comments.
Also, if I neglect you in some way send me a Flickr mail. But leave a message on one of my recent photos to check my Flickr Mail. I don't seem to get alerts when I get Flickr mail, and those darn Flickr re-modelers seemed to have removed the little mail counter that used to be in my upper right hand corner. If we have talked about art or photography in the past, then I am certainly interested in what you have to say!

(Updated 01-03-14) Privacy versus Authenticity:
I was originally all about privacy. I thought that if we are judged by our character and not our demographics then we will be treated as equals. The first thing to sew the seeds of doubt about online anonymity was when I saw "Andrew Purshottam (real name)" on an amazon review. I knew him. A graduate in computer science at UC Berkley. A decent human being. I guessed his reasoning was that credibility is more important than privacy in the area of product reviews. Should people know who we are, and what we do, and where we have come from, our age, our gender, our appearance?
I'm not sure how I feel about Facebook, Twitter, Yelp!, using "real names". I used to be more concerned about privacy. Now what is changing that is the theory that if we establish who we are we may have more influence. This would be especially true for the credibility of product and services reviews, like the ones we read on Amazon, and eBay. It could apply to Forums as well. The loss of privacy might be worth the increase in ones ability to know who they are talking to is not someone who is just trying to con you into buying something. Or rob you even. Consider this: Many people on Flickr essentially broadcast that they own expensive cameras and lenses. Now all the sudden people are using there real names, locations, geo-tagging (I don't even know what that means) they are Facebooking with their iPhones, and Blackberries, and Androids, and basically telling the world that they have a 5D Mark III, a 7D, and 9 Canon L lenses, where they live, and whether they are home or not.
I do have probably at least half a dozen lenses interesting enough for someone to want. But people, you could do a lot better than me! If you track me down, give me a call. I'll tell you who has the good stuff! Way better stuff! Rob them. In addition, this is one of the few times I get to brag that I am pretty much a violent psychotic individual whose dream is to die in battle, taking my opponent with me. I'm over 6 feet tall over 200 pounds, and proficient in two martial arts. You have been warned. Oh, and I'm sneaky and fight dirty!
Anyway, at first I erased all my EXIF, because of the philosophy of safety and privacy. Then I realized that that basic information is interesting to photographers, so now I leave it. I cant do anything (yet) about the fact that all my manual focus lenses say either (50mm, f/1.8), (50mm, f/1.4), or (0mm, f/0.0). To make it worse I do own a 50mm, though I rarely shoot wide open at f/1.8 because it of light fall off and bad metering.
But I actually did try to join Facebook. The process seemed to be tedious and aggravating so I ran out of patience.
And sorry, Google! I know it tears you up inside how worried you are about my loosing my password, but I just don't want to take advantage of you and burden you with my cell phone number. You guys at Google must be the greatest to care so much to ask me at least a hundred times! Then again, how is it you can remember my phone number, but not my answer to your validation questions? Screw that! If you are warm for my form way don't you just come out and ask for a date? Maybe we could take turns stalking each other. What's your phone number google mail groupy?
I guess what I am saying is that I am interested in people I interact with. But I am going the route of by passing the constant mechanized demands that we are subjected to.
I caved in and bought an iPhone like the rest of civilization. I have no doubt it can do miraculous things. First I have to figure it out, I guess. Still, it's something to look forward to! Update: Now my iPhone is stalking me. Asking for personal information. Sheesh, Siri! You need to find a boyfriend!

A few words about EXIF, Adapters. AFC chips for MF lenses, and then we will be free to move on to my seriously too big collection of lenses!
AFC: Statement!
I use AFC on most of my manual focus lenses!
EXIF disclaimer: Many of my old manual focus (MF) lenses have generic, or customized chips added to the lens mount adapters that allow the lenses to have AFC (AutoFocus Confirmation). Of course you still have to manually focus!
So if the lens is a native Canon EOS lens, the EXIF data "should" be correct". I don't know why but my Vivitar EF 100mm f/3.5 on Flicker says 100mm f/2.8. What's so weird is that in my apps, the f-stop is correctly communicated as f/3.5
AFC: Question
I don't really expect anyone to take the time to educate me on this, but it seems from what I've heard that:
-The best lens adapters are from Fotodiox
-The best AFC chips are made in Europe, not China!
-The only acceptable adapter from FD to EOS is by Canon,
or extremely expensive hand made adapters.

It's a good set of lens's. I could probably cover just about any situation if I had the required knowledge and skills. And I mostly pick them up when I need them, and not one minute sooner!

A lot of people don't say anything in there profiles. That's probably healthy. I usually look at a person's profile if they got my attention. Most of the time they don't say anything. I Hate that! I feel like if someone looks at my profile then they think we have something in common. Communicating through comments is difficult at best. I know people like to get comments, but it gets harder and harder to communicate through them because of all these awards, and groups that require to leave comments. It isn't so bad when I get a comment, because it doesn't happen in huge numbers. I see them all, pretty much. But I'm sure many of the people I leave comments never even see them because of the dozens of flashing awards. I've about given up on looking for any responses. That in turn, makes me less inclined to leave any comments. But I just prefer to wander around and leave comments when the spirit hits me. But maybe it doesn't seem fair to some people. So they want to force you to repay comments. It seems a bit controlling to me to say if you get one comment you must give one comment. But the next development in comment and award proliferation literally makes the situation impossible. The premise of get one comment leave two is really ridiculous isn't it. Come on, do the math! Surely this is not earth shattering! Look:

the 4 leave 2, yielding 8

LOL, say this new group only has 200 photos in it...doe everyone need to make 40 or more comments just because someone left you 1? I assume the people who start these are simply trying to make it impossible to actually communicate within a photo stream. No more feedback, no more discussion, just an avalanche of meaning less obstacles. But does Flickr get a handle on that?
Besides if you really must have someone's feedback, you could try asking for it. Anyway, I'm not going to knowingly submit anything that requires I jump through any hoops. And I'm don't check my Flickr mail either unless someone tells me on one of my photo's that they are sending me mail. The reason for this is that I don't ever see the notifications any more! Maybe silence really is gold.
Flickr has developed some excellent strengths too. But they are not the same strengths that made this a community. They are strengths that make it a resource. No I, at least feel like I am using a cloud drive and a reference work. I used to feel like it was part classroom, part field trip, part party. I am forced to adapt.
I hate adapting!
