ok, if you read this far, i'm a "bird guy," BS in biology (currently enrolled in grad program). my undergrad research was on the diversity of birds utilizing a small Atlantic coast barrier island. i band birds, esp. hummingbirds and orioles that spend the winter in SC. to really know the birds you have to know something about the places you find them, why they're in those places, and a little something about all of the other critters sharing those same spots. as such, you'll often find something about the subject of my photos in the title/comments section, at the very least something about its identity. you can't claim to love something and know nothing about it; there's more than enough hypocrisy and bovine feces on the planet already. i mis-spent my youth in the woods, swamps and on the blackwater rivers and beaches where i live. i learned about alot of these things while sitting in duck blinds, deer stands, wading in hardwood swamps, tromping thru fields looking for Bobwhites, pulling a hand seine, trying to catch a mess of fish or a decent wave. i'm a member of American Ornithologists' Union and Association of Field Ornithologists, a past president and former director of the local Audubon chapter, former member of the SC Important Bird Areas technical committee. i frequently moonlight as a bird guide and write a weekly newspaper column (11+ yrs now) about wild birds and their habitats. my most recent employment was as a GIS research specialist on a pilot watershed management project, where i worked primarily with the natural resource aspect of things. i do public programs about birding, backyard bird-feeding, hummingbirds (they're the "real" birds, y'all) butterflies, etc. in my spare time i plant all sorts of stuff in the yard where i live to feed birds and butterflies and see how much of it i can coax to survive (Salvias are way cool, i've experimented with about 40 spp. so far, only about 900 more to go...) oh yeah, i've had an "on again, off again" love affair with guitar since i was 12 or so. i was married once in another life and have a daughter that will soon be as old as i am...wierd, huh?
and every once in awhile, i like to try and photograph the things i love the best, that our society in general has lost respect for and interest in as we gather speed down the road to perdition. i don't believe that domesticated cats have the right to roam freely anywhere in the Western hemisphere, or that anyone should cut down a mature native tree for no better reason than they don't like to rake leaves. i believe in respecting personal property boundaries, and the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America means exactly what it says as written. i still say ma'am and sir, too...and reckon i always will.
