This shot has a nice story to it.
When my younger brother died in a car crash back in 2011, I got an overwhelming warm response on Flickr. While I was in the process of dealing with it I got a remarkable heartwarming letter from Alexander Elzinga, a Dutchman living a quiet life with his wife for decades in the south of France. At the funeral I read part of his emphatic message to my family.
From where I live, the Ardeche is not around the corner. So we corresponded frequently, but I thought we'd probably never meet IRL (in real life). But... early 2014 we were planning our summer vacation, and my family agreed to go and explore the Ardeche!
On August 10, without prior notice, I knocked on his door in his tiny, tiny village Saint-Étienne-de-Boulogne. - Une grande réunion! - Hugs and smiles all over the place. Later that week we were warmly received for dinner with my whole family, and a hike around town. Plus we went out for an evening/night shoot over at the Pont d'Arc - which was a fantastic experience!
I'm far from a true (nature) landscaper, but there I was, standing in the river with my tripod, battling mosquitos, avoiding bats - oh wait, I *thought* I had to avoid them! Later on in the dark, *pitch* black, star trails, along a swirling river, waving our torches, unforgettable memories.
Je suis reconnaissant et fier que j'ai un véritable ami en Ardèche. Merci Alexander, merci Dadou. Merci Flickr.
