Coridálido - Corydalus cornutus - Eastern Dobsonfly
Western Panama, highlands, close to a river. Pretty large insect; up to 14 cms and wingspan upt to 12.5 cms. Its larvae develop in water, where they are predators. Eggs are laid close to water streams and larvae (hellgrammites), once emerged, crawl into the water and hide under bottom stones. They feed on invertebrates and are a hell of a predator. Larvae develop slowly... could take 3 years to pupate, so then they get out of the water and bury themselves digging a hole in moist soil, shed their skin and pupate. In about 15 days, they emerge as adults, which live near streams and are attracted to night lights. Adults mate and lay their eggs and then die within a week or so.
