Paramount
The famous front gates of Paramount
movie studio - the only major studio still
operating within the actual confines of
geographical Hollywood - which is, of course,
distinct from metaphorical Hollywood.
Hollywood is both real and
imagined, and here both meet,
at this intersection of
Melrose and Gower,
at these famous gates,
on this old backlot where so
many movies have been shot -
this lot that was built on the
unpopulated land that belonged
to the Hollywood cemetery which
is directly north of it - with not even a wall
or fence separating.
These gates were most famously
featured in the film "Sunset Boulevard,"
though as any Hollywood historian knows-
those gates were actually the back gates of
the studio-
which are identical - off of Marathon Street.
Since 9-11, access to those gates by the
public has been denied. So
I shot these ones - for a feature
on Hollywood in Campus Circle magazine
which features other Hollywood landmarks,
such as the Chinese Theater
and Amoeba Record store.
