Joe

Was sitting all alone,

far from the other homeless

men and women in

downtown L.A.

on Temple Street

near Broadway. I asked if I

could take his photo and he

said, "No. They done taken

too many photos already."

Then we spoke

for a few moments, and

he changed his mind.

But when I aimed my

camera at him, he

looked down, like this,

and though I asked him

to lift his head, this is how

he chose to be photographed.

Alone, looking down

at the earth.
