Almost Midnight
Almost midnight at Convict Lake. The moon was full, or near it, making redundant my headlamp, but a pair of glowing eyes in the hillside brush farther back along the trail had me flicking my light on and constantly looking around. I told myself they're probably just those of a raccoon, but the wait for my long exposures was slow and uneasy.
Back home, after reading about the mountain lion sightings around this lake, and knowing raccoons to be a generally restive bunch--not ones to solitarily sit and stare--I now believe otherwise.
