Spaceship Earth 2000

I read Tom Bricker's amazing Photography Buying Guide today, and he recommended again a lens that he recommended to me months ago: the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. It inspired me to shoot my camera for the first time in a long time.

Back in 2000, there was, as we all know, a big celebration at Walt Disney World. Each kid who stayed on-site, like I did on a family vacation, got a free gift. I cannot remember what my sister got, but I was excited to get a pin-lanyard with key-card holder, all contained in a miniature Spaceship Earth. I was fourteen.

Eleven years later, this is one of my most treasured possessions. It contains all the hotel-key-cards from the vacations I've been on, as well as my Disney pin collection. And since my family's house has been ravished by a fire earlier this month, and a lot of our possessions ruined and memories lost, this means the world to me. My family and cat are safe, and that, in the end, is what matters. However, the smallest things in life, things we got out without damage, now take on the biggest meanings in our hearts.

It probably did not cost a lot to make. It probably has been thrown out a million times before. But to me, this is still Disney. And so, my first pictures taken since the fire, I start with this shot. It's a bonus for all of you; I'll have more at-Disney shots again tomorrow.
