Millions, Like Stars in My Hands

Wikipedia tells us that hoar frost refers to white ice crystals deposited on the ground or loosely attached to exposed objects such as wires or leaves. It forms on cold, clear nights when conditions are such that heat radiates out to the open sky faster than it can be replaced from nearby sources such as wind or warm objects.

This photo shows hoar frost deposited on ivy leaves. Notice how the frost is especially thick along the edges of the leaves. I took it in the same session as the ones of the ferns and the grasses.

What these photos do not capture are the millions of tiny stars or diamonds of light glittering as the light source (such as a flashlight) or the viewer moves about. I wish I could capture that effect; unfortunately, this is just a still image.

The title was inspired by the music release of the Australian band Single Gun Theory. It's full title is "Millions, Like Stars in My Hands, the Daggers in My Heart, Wage War". I love this disc. It is an eclectic mix of exotic rhythms, world music, synthesizers, historic spoken word samples, and so much more. It is my favorite release by Single Gun Theory. Worth checking out if you have never heard of them (go to Amazon's Digital Music offerings and listen to the samples).
