L’Île de la Cité est le centre de l’antique Lutèce comme celui du Paris medieval et contemporain.
Elle est formée par les méandres de la Seine. Habitée par les Gaulois Parisis dès le deuxième siècle avant J-C et occupée par les Romains de Jules César en 52 avant J-C, elle s’étend sur sept hectares, au carrefour de la navigation sur la Seine et de la grande voie romaine appelée le cardo (actuellement dans l’axe de la rue Saint Martin et de la rue Saint Jacques). Cette voie enjambait le fleuve, à l’époque romaine, à l’aide de deux ponts de bois sur pilotis : le Grand Pont (actuel Pont Notre-Dame) et le Petit Pont.

The Île de la Cité was the centre of ancient Lutetium, medieval Paris and the contemporary capital.
Formed by two meanders of the Seine. It was inhabited by the Parisi Gauls starting in the second century B.C. and was occupied by Jules Caesar’s Romans in 52 B.C. It covers seven hectares at the crossroads of the Seine and the major Roman road called the cardo (today the corner of the Rue Saint Martin and the Rue Saint Jacques). In Roman times, this road crossed the river thanks to two wooden bridges on piles: the Grand Pont (today’s Pont Notre-Dame) and the Petit Pont.
