Springtime on the 14th Hole at Grizzly Ranch
Zakopane in the Sierras. Hidden in the trees...
Phase 1 of the construction of our Family compound in the High Sierras of northern California.
A small Caretaker's Cabin (Vorwerk), actually a dose mit emaille und brillanten... our little jewel box. Inspired by the podhale dwellings of the Carpathian Alps, we began with a simple Zakopane Style, and added architectural accoutrements from "the Land of the Blue Eyes"... carved portals and panels from the Stave Churches of Scandinavia, roof details such as ridges and okhlupen from the DVINA River Region of NW Russia, carved doors from the Ukraine, rosemal'ing and bauernmalerai from Norge and Bavaria, and classic stone floors from old Prussia. Chinking between the logs is reminiscent of the old log dwellings of Bohemia. In addition, we drew inspiration from carved shutters from Lillehammer, Telemark and carvings from cathedrals in Bremen and Hamburg. One could say a real Hanza Federation style haus..... In time we will be building a Main Hall, Bunkhouse for future grandchildren, and an Artist Studio. Zakopane in the Sierras is at 6000 ft elevation, about one hour drive north of Lake Tahoe.
