The New Standard
Neon designating location of the office of The Boots Motel, which now appears to be very low-income housing/rentals. The clientele makes me think it may (may) not be safe at night, and Hubby refused to let me go walking around the place despite my ability to defend myself (to say nothing of the fact HE was there, too). As you can see, The Boots could use some love and affection; one of the large windows in one of the rooms had been destroyed and was covered by particleboard; trash was everywhere and there were other spots that looked boarded up as well.
It was just plain sad.
From what I gather, the Boots—a Route 66 icon—has been for sale for ages. At one point, it was nearly sold and demolished for what I'm sure was another desperately-needed Walgreens (mouthwatering photo of the Boots there). Needless to say, despite the current state of disrepair, I'm glad THAT has not happened.
If turned back into a motel, it would make a great place to spend the night, one that isn't far from, for instance, Red Oak II. We can hope. It cold be a really marvellous motel with its gorgeous lines and style. Back in its day, The Boots was as modern as you could get, with a radio in every room! Legend has it Clark Gable once stayed here, too.
