Svartifoss, Iceland
Svartifoss (Black Fall) is surrounded by dark basalt columns located within Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland. These hexagonal columns were formed by lava that cooled at a slow rate which crystallized forming basalt. Over time rapid temperature fluctuations resulted in fractures in the basalt creating hexagonal patterns. It is said that these columns were the inspiration to the architectural design of the Hallgrimskirkja church in the heart of Reykjavik.
