Hidden Gems of Orion
The Great Orion Nebula, M42, together with the Horse Head nebula, usually labeled as IC434 or Barnard 33, were shot during expedition to Maydanak observatory, Uzbekistan, 2550m above see level, at the end of 2 nights, Sep 13, 14, 2012.
QSI-583ws + AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II @ f2 + EQ-5 SynScan
LRGB, 5 x (8min + 1min + 15sec) in each channel, HDR.
While, due to limited amount of collected photons, there are some "technical imperfections" in the shot, I like it's aesthetic impression. All that dust is beautiful! Especially combination of brown steams of the dust with purple color of the hydrogen emission in the right bottom corner.
***
If you're interested in background and scientific bytes about objects imaged on the shot, you can start from wikipedia articles on Orion constellation, Orion Nebula, Horsehead Nebula, & Flame Nebula.
Archive of APOD will reveal more images of the area (search for "Orion" on the page) annotated by professional astronomer.
