yorklib says: The photographer avoided the obvious and chose to focus on the green husk portion of the ear rather than a "front-on" focus on the yellow kernels.

yorklib says: The way the extended husks extend beyond the tip of the ear forms a visual crown. The overall impression is that this one is on a farmstead.

yorklib says: The ear sits with other outsized wooden vegetables. Wonder if the market materialized?

yorklib says: The wide flair on the husk is an accomplishment. Did the carver stand a log upside-down to take advantage of the flare at the base of the trunk? Or was it strategic use of a big branch?

yorklib says: Trying to imagine the shape of the original tree trunk that would have that side growth to form the husk -- or is the carving two pieces of wood fit together? This photo depicts human interaction with the giant ear as well.

yorklib says: Most giant corn ear carvings go for rough finish & paint. This one is sanded smooth and has a clear finish.

yorklib says: A classic red "N" emphasizes this one celebrates University of Nebraska sports. It is not clear if the rest is painted yellow or is just natural wood that has not weathered to gray.

yorklib says: Consider: 1) The ear is standing on its tip rather than the butt end. 2) The chain saw undercut the wood grain too much so the husks broke off and are lying on the ground. 3) The stylized grid of kernels against the grid of mortar lines in the brick wall.

yorklib says: This one is at Richardson Farm near Chicago. Trying to represent a whole corn stalk with a chain saw wood carving is impressive. They used a substantial portion of the tree trunk . The corn ear is clear, and the tassel is a nice piece of work. "Sassnasty" has a photo of the tree being carved in fall 2008.

yorklib says: Another photo of this piece is clearer overall, but this one shows the raccoon face a little better. Go to Amboy, Illinois to see it for yourself. This one was first selected for the Corn Inspires gallery, and was moved after this "spin-off" was started.

yorklib says: You have to love the whimsy of this piece. There are several other views of it in photo sets about the Art Farm. (For more about this Nebraska location, check out artfarmnebraska_dot_org.)
