Lowland tropical forest in Cat Tien National Park

Cat Tien National Park is a nature conservation area protecting lowland tropical forests and wetlands. It is located 150 km northeast of HCMC and 150 km southwest of Dalat. It covers an area of 720 sq km. It is part of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve which is a UNESCO programme for conservation and sustainable economic development.

There is a trail leading to Bàu Sấu or Crocodile Lake. The trail provides a great opportunity to observe old trees and tropical plants with occasional sighting of wildlife.

The giant tree in the photo is one of many old trees that survived the spraying of defoliants during the American War. It is a fig species called Đa bóp cổ (Ficus sumatrana), which is native to Southeast Asia.

Like many other fig species, it is a parasite plant that lives on the trunk of other tree. The host tree is strangled eventually.
