Store Specializing in Rice Ball Ingredients

A shop in Tsukiji Outside Market "specializing in rice ball ingredients" according to their advertisement in English. Rice ball is called Onigiri, Nigirimesi or (O)musubi in Japanese. It is a ball of plain rice with salty ingredient(s) in the core. It is often wrapped in Nori, paper-like edible seaweed. It is a portable food equivalent to sandwich in the West.

Typical rice ball ingredients are Umeboshi (pickled salty plum), grilled salmon, salted Konbu (seaweed), Tarako (cod roe), Tsukudani (seafoods cooked in thick soy sauce) etc. Salty ingredients are indispensable to preserve Onigiri for hours.

This small shop in Tsukiji specialises in selling a huge variety of ingredients for the rice ball other than the above.

Onigiri is becoming popular outside of Japan. I was surprised in an Eva Air flight in Taiwan when they served an Onigiri as on-board meal.
