Settlement by the river
This picturesque settlement is located in the Chikuni (千国) community, which is several km upstream from Naka-otari. There is no alluvial land in this section of the Himekawa, and the settlement is developed on a narrow terrace overlooking the ravine.
This photo was taken from the National Route 148 that is laid out along the ravine by cutting the cliff on the opposite side. Surprisingly, JR Ooito Line is also laid out on the same side just below NR 148.
Many of the houses in Chikuni are located on the slopes along tributary streams of the Himekawa and hidden from the road and the railways.
