Takonoki (Pandanus boninensis) is the symbol tree of the municipality according to the signboard attached. It is so named as the shape of tree with many aerial routes looks like an octopus (蛸 tako).
The same signboard publicises Munin-himetsubaki (Schima mertensiana) as the symbol flower, Hahajima-meguro (Apalopteron familiare hahajima) as the symbol bird, and Aomuro (Decapterus macarellus) as the symbol fish. These symbols are endemic to Ogasawara except for Aomuro.
Direction signs include 2,342km to Palau, 1,538km to Guam, 979km to Tokyo, 59km to Hahajima, 310km to Iwo Jima, and 968km to Okinawa.
