Mary of Bethany
To signify deep mourning, Santa Maria de Betania of Paete, Laguna is dressed in Black Italian Satin. The vestment is embellished with dramatic trompe l' oeil painting. Trompe l'oeil is a French term which literally means " to deceive the eye ". It is a style of painting in which subjects are depicted with almost three dimensional or photographically realistic details.
The painting for the vestment simulates the Spanish Baroque embroideries and the tedious technique implied different shades of gold and amber to replicate the gold threads of the Baroque inspirations . For full effect and detail, the handpainting is further enhanced with precious beadwork meticulously sewn by hand. Beadings consist of graduating sizes of champagne pearls , glass beads and rose cut Austrian Crystals added a great addition to this vestment design.
To convey our family's grief for the loss of a beloved Aunt, we opted to shroud the countenance of Maria de Betania with French Lace and Illusion tulle on the night of the procession.
