Description from RIGB
"The Internet is not just a series of tubes (or physical networks); it's also a series of ideas. These ideas express how the world works or, at least, how it would work if the geeks where in charge. Digital enthusiasts point to Wikipedia - the quintessential Internet project - to argue that decentralization beats centralization. Or they invoke the Arab Spring or Occupy Wall Street to show that networks beat hierarchies.
Likewise, techno-dystopians point to the Internet to make arguments about the inevitable rise of state and corporate surveillance or the imminent death of reading or the unavoidable triumph of cats. But are we investing the Internet with too much meaning? Is there a grand story - perhaps on the state of modernity - to be told about the Internet?
In this talk Evgeny Morozov will take a penetrating look at the shape of society in the digital age, of the direction in which the 21st Century may take us, and of the alternate paths we can still choose.
