上酱肥牛土豆泥 (Potato Mash With Sizzling Beef Gravy In A Stone Bowl)

Lunch @ '70后饭吧' in Shanghai.

 

Potato has always been a staple in Shanghai, probably a heritage from its days as an International City in the early parts of the previous century. Beef, or to be exact, thin slices of fatty beef is popular in Shanghai for that rich tallowy fatty taste. Combine east and west, fused in a sizzling stone bowl, and served with everything bubbling and steaming away.

 

The mashed potato was smooth, rich and creamy. My mate thought he tasted cheese but I thought it was more cream. The gravy definitely screams curry - it was almost like the curry dip McDonald's serve Chicken Nuggets with back home. In all honesty, I can't really smell the beef but I can taste them once I dug them out of the gravy moot surrounding the mash potato.

 

Interesting way to serve mashed potato.
