甜沫 (Millet Soup)
Dinner @ '聚丰德' (Jufengde) in Jinan, a renounced chain of restaurant serving Shandong cuisine.
This is a dish famous in Jinan. The name translated as "Sweet Foam" which I think is a total misnomer. It is not a dessert but a soup and a savoury one at that. Legends go that a scholar once had a bowl of this soup offered by a kind hearted soul while in dire conditions, he mistakenly remembered the wrong name and the name stuck.
Millet is grounded into a fine powder and then used as the main ingredient of this soup, with added crushed peanuts, dried tofu, mung bean noodles and spinach. Technically, it sounded plenty tasty but in all honesty, this soup was quite bland. It was almost like drinking thickened water.
Both myself and my mate were terribly disappointed.....unless the dish was meant to taste this way!
