三柰 (Kencur) [Kaempferia galangal]

A visit to the spice wholesale market in Chengdu @ '五块石农副产品市场'.

 

It is one of the spices used in a 'potpourri' mix for Hot Pot. Seems to be another member of the galangal-ginger family group, and another one of four plants called Galangal.

 

(The 4 Galangals: Alpinia galanga or greater galangal, Alpinia officinarum or lesser galangal, Kaempferia galanga, also called kencur, aromatic ginger or sand ginger and Boesenbergia rotunda, also called Chinese ginger or fingerroot.)
