Bandit Duck (土匪鸭)
Lunch from '好戏连台', a local 'steamed food' chain, serving Chinese style fast food.
The Chinese believes that steaming food best preserves the nutrients, as opposed to food that are fried or microwaved. In opposition to the rise of Western fast food such as McDonald's, Burger King and KFC, several local franchises have bloomed up successfully, competing stiffly among each other to offer healthier, more nutritional and more ethnic driven economical choices to the masses.
'好戏连台' is one of such chains, albeit a smaller player on the scene. Here, it is offering 'Bandit Duck', a spicy Hunan "Xiang" (湘) style dish, along with some steamed fresh greens, boiled soup brewed with pork ribs and preserved vegetables with steamed rice, for just RMB30. Customers can choose to add on more side dishes if desired, for example, steamed egg for just another RMB4 more.
A note of caution: The meat dishes tend to be bony, or full of cartilages and there are usually more vegetable than meat. But for 30RMB, it is a quick, familiar and widely assumed to be healthier choice for people on-the-go.
As for the Bandit Duck....the name of the dish came about because the chef that invented the dish used to scream at the ducks she reared for destroying her crops. "Bandits" she termed them. And in one anger spite, she cooked one of them perfectly and discovered the meat to be extra delectable. A new wonderful dish was born.
