Vietnamese Apple {Malus doumeri?}

These small green little globs were on offer in the fruit basket in the hotel room. We will see them again later in the wet markets.

They reminded me of the inedible Pong Pong fruits back home. These Vietnamese apples, which I believe are more crab-apples like, are harder, smaller and more sour than regular apples. The skin also has a waxier feel.

From the Internet, it seems these are best consumed with some salt and a little chilli - the salt seemingly helps to make the apples taste sweeter with a mild spicy kick.

I never realise apples grow in Vietnam so this fruit was a great mystery for a while.
