Savoury Beancurd Jelly (豆腐涝)
This is another one of the 'Qinhuai 8 Specialties' (秦淮八绝), although the real McCoy is the version from '六凤居'.
This version is from the Food Street @ Fuzimiao (夫子庙).
Beancurd jelly is usually served as a sweet dessert in Southern China and Southeast Asia, but up north, the savoury version rules the day. It is served with a gravy made from soysauce, sesame oil and chilli oil, along with chopped dried shrimps, preserved vegetable, fried shallots and mixed stir-fried vegetable.
Having grown up to treat the dish as a dessert, the savoury version took some getting used to for myself!
