Meat Dumplings With Fermented Red Rice Lees (紅糟肉圓/红糟肉圆)

The other specialty from '九份金枝紅糟肉圓' - Meat Dumplings flavoured with fermented red rice lees.

 

Earlier, I had featured the famous meat dumplings from Zhanghua. Here in Jiufen, they were given a new twist and up popped the fire-engine reddish version, flavoured with fermented red rice lees. There is now a winey fermented fruity sweetness to the aroma and taste but yet is not overwhelming to distract the meaty savouriness of the dumpling.

 

I was not expecting it to taste too good but it proved me wrong.
