Crab Shell Biscuits (蟹壳黄)
A famous local pastry from a local Shanghainese culinary landmark - '王家沙'.
Despite the name, there is no real crab shell, or for that the matter, any crab used. The name came about because the pastry resembles a crab shell.
The pastry originates from the area that includes Jiangsu and Anhui provinces and Shanghai City. Made from flour, the pastry is baked with a variety of fillings, that could be sweet or savoury, and is always dusted with an outer coating of toasted sesame seeds.
I have opted for 2 types of savoury fillings: grated radish (the one with the toasted white sesame seeds) and minced pork (the one with the toasted black sesame seeds).
PS: Claims have been made online that the version from '吴宛饼家' is the best in the city.
