Zhanghua Meat Dumplings (彰化肉圆)
The very last stop in Zhanghua on our culinary hike for one of the 'Big 3s' of Zhanghua's culinary must(s) - the Meat Dumplings, and not just any meat dumplings, THE one from '阿彰肉圆'.
The dumpling is served in a bowl, with the middle slitted open for easy consumption, sprinkled with a handful of freshly chopped cilantro. The gravy is a mixture of soysauce and fermented bean paste and folks who like their dumplings spicy, could add chilli paste and crushed garlic paste as well.
As texture goes, it is about the 'Q' again. Taiwanese love their 'Q' texture - that 'melting mozzarella' gooey stringy bouncy texture. The filling is very tasty and fresh, with hardly a hint of the animalic note that sometimes come with using pork that is non-fresh.
I can understand why Taiwanese loves this dish. I love it too. I love the 'Crystal Dumplings' back home - this is almost an oversized version - what is there to dislike?
