Calabash (葫芦)

It's summer in Shanghai now. Just behind my place is Zhang Garden (张园), an old area of the city and I saw this vine climbing all over one of the houses and it's fruiting.

Calabash, Hu Lu Squash or Bottle Gouard, is more prized for its shape to be used as a water container, than as food. They look nice as wall ornaments no doubt.

And should one choose to eat them, the flesh is generally used in soups or wok stir-fried.
