Stir-Fried Mountain Deer (炒山羌)

Lunch at an open air market in Cingjing [清境]. A lot of the stalls here sell Yunnan styled food. Later, we learnt that a big number of Nationalist soldiers chose to stay in this area, after retreating from the mainland when the Nationalist government lost the Civil War.

台湾山羌 {Muntiacus reevesi micrurus} is a type of small wild deer found in Taiwan. The indigenous aborigines are allowed to hunt them, consume and sell the excess meat. Technically, it is venison - lean, non-fatty red meat. Here, the stall owner had wok stir-fried it with some greens and carrots with soysauce. Fairly tasty except the stall owner had overcooked the meat a tad and they turned out a little more chewy than desired.
