Fried Egg With Angelica Leaves (當歸葉煎蛋/当归叶煎蛋)

Lunch at an open air market in Cingjing [清境]. A lot of the stalls here sell Yunnan styled food. Later, we learnt that a big number of Nationalist soldiers chose to stay in this area, after retreating from the mainland when the Nationalist government lost the Civil War.

Angelica is a type of Chinese medicinal herb. It has been earthy medicinal aroma and taste and can be very overpowering. I have never heard of eggs fried with angelica leaves and was very intrigued to have a try.

The leaves have the same earthy medicinal characters but milder. Only small pieces were used, thankfully, or its presence would have overwhelmed the rich cream eggy taste of the fried egg. The taste was a tad weird and perplexing but frankly not awful. The flavour actually grew on me eventually.
