Japanese Banana (芭蕉)
The taxi driver we had hired for the day tour stopped by this roadside stall, manned by a grandmotherly-type owner and treated myself and mate to some local bananas which he called "芭蕉". They have a more interesting taste that the normal banana (香蕉) he claimed. The colour is not as vibrant as the common banana I would reckon and a quick check on the Internet reveals the species name to be "Musa basjoo" and is a close relative of the common banana.
I am one of those people who actually prefers the fake flavour of banana, rather than the real fruit, which I always find unappetisingly slimy. In all honesty, I find little differences between both kinds since you can't really go far with the taste and texture of bananas. My mate and myself carried the fruit around for a couple of days (thought we might finish it) but in the end, we discarded the entire bunch when it started to turn black.
