Coffin Toast/Coffin Board (棺材板)
This is a specialty snack from the city of Tainan (台南), in the south of Taiwan although its popularity has seen it appearing all across the country and it is quite common to find it in night markets.
Essentially it's a thick toast with the middle bread portion dug out and filled with a filling made traditionally from chicken meat, peas, carrots etc. The top of the toast (the lid of the 'coffin' so to speak) is then placed back on before serving. Of course, today, the filling could take various forms and taste - in my case, I have opted for a filling of spicy Sichuan style chicken.
Despite the rather awful sounding but very intriguing name, this is a wonderful snack. I like toast, and I like this version better as the toast has been upgraded to a French Toast version. For something that cost me only NT$45, it is something well worthy of a snack for munching 6 feet under.
