Plum Blossom Cake [梅花糕]

A day trip to Qi Bao Old Street [七宝老街] in Shanghai.

 

Another old world dessert from the Qing Dynasty - Plum Blossom Cake is the specialty of Suzhou (苏州).

 

The cake is so called because the shape resembles plum blossom.

 

The dough is made with flour, sugar, alkaline water, lard and strands of coloured green and red melon strips. The dough is then poured into a mould and baked with sweetened red bean paste.
