Fish (Halibut) & Chips

Lunch @ "The Laughing Halibut".

The spot was packed with lunch crowd and tourists like myself alike and every one was kinda jammed tight in the narrow space.

The quintessential UK dish and probably one of the best known to the outside world.

My group had came here primarily for Cod, since the Atlantic Cod is the true Cod, while the Cod(s) we tend to find in Singapore are actually not true Cods but either the Sablefish or the Chilean Seabass (mothership.sg/2021/12/singapore-cod-chilean-seabass-expla...).

The Atlantic Cod is in fact, less fatty but flakier and has the aroma of fresh cucumber/green melons....akin to those found in frozen "Fish Fingers".

I digressed: The spot offered 6 choices for fish: Hake, Plaice, Rock (Dogfish), Haddock, Cod & Halibut.

I didn't know that Halibut is more expensive than Cod! Is this why the shop is called "The Laughing Halibut" because it has the last laugh?

Of course, we had to pit the 2 against each other, while we leave the cheaper 4 out in the cold.

The batter here was a tad crunchier and less "airy" than some one may find in more upmarkety restaurants.

(And I detest they serve wedges instead of shoestring fries)

But what about the tastes?

Cod, the bottom piece, tasted as what I had expected: Like frozen "fish fingers" but less fishy. The flesh flaked easily and thus structurally enjoyable.

Halibut, on the other hand, the top piece, had a more compacted and firmer flesh and certainly less structurally flaky. It also had less of the green taste that defined Cod....and more of the black-fishy type fishiness, reminding myself more of the Asian Seabass (aka Barramundi).

Quite frankly, I don't mind both but as a person who generally dislikes fishy stuff...I actually prefer the Cod. Just so.
