Pepinos {Solanum muricatum}
Solanum muricatum is indigenous to South America. It also goes by a longer name, Pepino dulce. A member of the Solanaceae family, it is related to the tomato and the eggplant. Physically, it resembles a tomato but has skin that turned from white to yellow. I stumbled upon this fruit in Shanghai, imported from Haikou, in Hainan Island. This is the famed "人参果" from "Journey To The West" (西游记) where it was believed, you can attain immortality upon eating it. It has a very mild taste, juicy and crunchy when unripe and softer when ripened. Tastes like a very mild honeydew with hints of cucumber.
