Mountain Vegetable (Sansaiten) Tempura

Dinner @ "Ueno Yabu Soba" in Tokyo.

 

This was on the seasonal menu - there was no English translation and I took a leap of faith.

 

I have no idea what the vegetable really are, but from a similar dish elsewhere, these are the likely vegetable I enjoyed: The freshly picked sprouts of butterbur, mountain asparagus, bamboo shoots, koshiabura, ostrich ferns and angelica buds....along with a stalk of freshly pickled ginger bud!

 

Some of these unique vegetable did come with a slight bitter aftertaste which I am not too fond of but each of them delivered exciting new tastes and profiles that I have not really encountered.
