Curry Crab

Lunch @ "The Ministry Of Crab" in Colombo.

"A traditional Sri Lankan curry made using drumstick leaves and Sri Lanka’s freshest crabs."

Everyone, Sri Lankan and non Sri Lankan has an opinion about their mud crabs. "The best ones are sold to Singapore!", "You will not enjoy their best crabs in Sri Lanka!" ran through my ears. Point noted but am I there to eat RAW crabs?

I have been curious about this dish ever since I saw it on a documentary and in the show, the locals discard the much prized roes as "offal waste". I still remember the incredulous look on the face of the Taiwanese chef cum avid traveller. So naturally, I came seeking the dish....and yes, there could be places to enjoy this dish better, but hey folks, my choice is "The Ministry Of Crab". There!

It was a salty dish. The curry sauce was almost uni-dimensional in basic taste - salty. There was hardly any sweetness and umaminess detected. I find myself thirsting for water a couple of hours after the dish - all dehydrated.

On the other hand, the crab - I had a small one (up to 700g) was sublime - fresh, sweet and supple. I polished off the dish on my own - mate is not a crustacean lover.
