Hainan Savoury Waffles (海南华夫)
Lunch @ "Hongdae Bear Cafe" (弘大熊), a Korean-themed Waffles & Coffee cafe.
The name of the dish caught my eyes - I thought there must be something coconutty imbedded (Hainan province is famous within China for coconuts) but alas the waffle arrived more doughy than the European style of crunchy waffles. And except for a sunny side up heavily dusted with crushed blackpepper, an haphazard topping of Arugula and 2 savoury sauces of honey mustard and sweet chilli, this was as close it gets to "savoury". As for the "Hainan" part....there was absolutely no trace to be found. (No bacon, no ham....or even poached chicken? Hainan province is afterall the ancestry source of famed Singaporean dish "Hainanese Chicken Rice")
Note to cafe owner: You may wish to invest in bigger serving plates? The plate used was too small and it was a juggle trying to consume the waffles without worrying that they were going to escape with their lives.
