Beef Steak Cuban Sandwich

Lunch @ "Jalapeno".

The famous Cuban Sandwich - encountered for the first time in Shanghai......strangely in a Mexican themed restaurant. This was the set lunch for today, served with Pico de Gallo (Salsa), spiced rice and salad.

This sandwich is made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread, which is like a softer version of a French baguette. Documentaries I have seen plus Wikipedia advised that it is believed by some that the sandwich was a common lunch food for workers in both the cigar factories and sugar mills of Cuba (especially in big cities such as Havana or Santiago de Cuba) and the cigar factories of Key West by the 1860s. It's popularity in the US (especially in Florida) was attributed to the Cuban community.

I like the gooey-ness of the melted cheese, which was very evident in this version.
